📖 The Story of Vinayaka Chavithi
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesha from sandalwood paste to guard her chamber. One day, when Lord Shiva (her consort) tried to enter, little Ganesha stopped him as per his mother’s command. Not recognizing his own son, Shiva became furious and cut off Ganesha’s head.
When Parvati saw this, she was heartbroken and demanded Shiva bring her son back to life. To pacify her, Shiva instructed his followers to bring the head of the first living being they found facing north. They brought the head of an elephant, and Lord Shiva placed it on Ganesha’s body, giving him a new life. From then on, Ganesha became the beloved elephant-headed god, and Shiva blessed him, saying that Ganesha would be worshipped first before any new beginning or ritual.

The modern tradition of celebrating Vinayaka Chavithi as a public festival was popularized by freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the late 19th century.
